Curious about Chiropractic Care?
Frequently asked questions
Have you been thinking about Chiropractic Care but maybe have a few questions about it? You’re not alone. Here are some answers to some common questions our patients ask us!
What do Chiropractors do?
Chiropractors are primary healthcare providers who focus on the intimate link between the nervous system and the spine. They use their hands to help treat and manage many musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain, neck pain and headaches.
They focus on realigning the body to its correct position, which helps to ensure that the joints, muscles, and nervous system is functioning at its best – this enables you, the patient, to be able to function and perform at your best.
Is Chiropractic treatment safe?
Chiropractic treatment is extremely safe. Like everything in life, however, there are certain risks associated with it. The most common side effect after a chiropractic treatment is a mild soreness and tenderness.
During the Chiropractic physical examination, the chiropractor will perform specific tests to deduce if treatment is safe and appropriate, and all risks/side effects are discussed prior to the commencement of treatment.
What conditions do Chiropractors treat?
There is a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions that chiropractors treat regularly. The more common conditions include all varieties of back pain and neck pain, headaches, migraines, and other spine-related conditions. You can learn more about the conditions we can help treat here.
What is a Chiropractic adjustment?
A Chiropractic adjustment is a precise movement with specific force applied to a joint that is ‘stuck’, or restricted. This helps to ensure that the joint is moving as it should, which results in an increase in mobility and function.
Do Chiropractic adjustments hurt?
Chiropractors are trained for 5 years in order to deliver safe and effective adjustments. The adjustment itself is not designed to be painful, however it can feel a little uncomfortable.
Chiropractors will tailor every adjustment specifically to suit their patient, to make it as comfortable as possible. When adjustments are performed, chiropractors use skill and technique above strength and force to get the desired outcome.
Am I too old or too young to see a Chiropractor?
You are never too old or too young to visit a Chiropractor.
The spine is the backbone (literally) of our body, and we must keep it functioning correctly and moving well, to ensure that you lead your best possible life. Chiropractors tailor their treatment styles depending on a range of aspects, age being one of them.
Typically, more gentle techniques are used on infants and children, and for the older population, we can vary our techniques depending on the individual’s needs (i.e. manual adjustments, instrument-assisted adjustments, drop table).
Are all patients adjusted the same?
Every patient who visits a Chiropractic clinic is uniquely different. The physical exam and treatment that is received is therefore specifically tailored to that person’s needs. People respond differently to certain treatment methods, so the Chiropractor will alter their treatment methods to suit each unique patient. Not one Chiropractic treatment will ever be exactly the same. Learn about the North Rockhampton Chiropractic process on the What to Expect page.
Why doesn't the relief last when I 'crack' my own neck or back?
When you self-manipulate, or crack your neck or back, you are moving areas of the spine that don’t need to be moved. These areas are typically above or below the joint which is causing the issue. It may give you relief for a little while, however, you are not addressing the restricted area and so the pain returns.
Chiropractors spend 5 years studying to know exactly where and when to adjust. When Chiropractors perform an adjustment, they adjust the restriction to help improve nerve and joint function.
